Mikayla works at Abitha’s Apothecary in Albuquerque. She has intuitive gifts and she works with fairies. I know very little about the fairy realm so I wanted to hear about Mikayla’s experiences. Turns out, there are many kinds of fairies; some are benevolent and others are not. In general, fairies are magical creatures with a human appearance.

When I asked Mikayla about the fairies, she chuckled and said, “In all honesty, I describe my magic as ‘controlled chaos.’ My magic is working with a bunch of two-year olds who have way too much legal knowledge.

“The fae I work with are waist-high and lower. I work with things like brownies, pixies, house fae, and little people. There are billions of kinds of fairies (fair folk) stemming from all sorts of cultures and places.”

The shop has three tiny doors for the small fairies, because they don’t like to use adult doors.

Mikayla has seen and heard fairies since she was a child. Her mother and grandmother have also seen them.

She explained, “Sometimes, I see little figures. Sometimes, I see sparkles. That’s what it looks like to me when they are super-out and busy. Have you ever caught a light from the corner of your eye? It’s like a floating sparkle. That’s what they look like to me. Little, floaty things. I can see some as humanoid figures.”

I asked, “What kind of conversations do you have?”

Mikayla answered, “It’s a lot of sass, partially because of my [young] age. We are very sassy with each other. If you catch me on a busy day, you’ll hear me yell at them, ‘No!’ ‘Shut your mouth.’ ‘I hear you. Hush your faces.’”

Why does Mikayla put up with the chaos? Because the fairies give her good information. They are her Guides.

When I asked Mikayla if she did readings for clients, she told me that she didn’t do readings with cards. Her gift was knowing what people needed.  

She said, “I see, or I feel, energy vibrations. Everybody has a wave to them. Depending on what you are doing, your wave will change. Some things fit into it perfectly and don’t mess it up at all. Some things will completely throw off the pattern.”

I wondered, “Is that like looking at someone’s aura?”

Mikalya answered, “It’s similar. I am more musically-inclined, so it’s more like music to me. It’s less of a seeing and more of a hearing and feeling.”

She added, “I feel things. It’s almost like a magnet. I take a lot of energy in from my hands. [She snapped her fingers.] It’s where I catch a lot. You will see me walking around and holding my palms over things. It feels like a magnetic pull. It’s a honing pull. My palm is a really wide pull which will narrow me down to maybe four things. The finger snap will pull me in to two. It tells me what somebody needs, or what I need.”

“I ask customers to show me what they are holding. I can pick up a lot off the pattern of what they are holding. For example, if they are holding four sets of incense, I can see that they are overlapping on four things and that just one set will do all those things for them. If I’m looking at 10 candles, you will see me snap, and I can narrow down what they need to a single candle.”

Mikayla continued, “Have you ever listened to a piece of music and felt, ‘This needs something’? Have you ever tasted a soup and thought, ‘This needs something’? That’s how I feel about energies. ‘This needs something.’”

“I also call on the fairies for help. The fae will tell me what people need. They are my list-takers. If I am not seeing something, or I am having trouble catching something, it’s like a bunch of tiny children yelling in sync, ‘This thing!’ Or, they ring my head like a box of bells. Chimes. ‘Ding!’ ‘Okay, I hear you.’”

I asked more about fairies, in general.

Mikayla responded, “My mom deals with bigger fae. She deals in older, larger fae. I deal in little fae because of my level of responsibility and because I am very chaotic. I do topic changes. I can’t deal with the older fae because they are much more contractual. They are more legal. They are like, ‘Here is our contract. Here are all the things we are doing. Here are our loopholes so we can get out of it. Here’s the thing you are doing that you signed your life away for.’

“I learned at a very young age that you never make deals with them. You never ask them for anything. You never yell at them.”

She added, “If you ever find yourself in a circle, don’t do anything. Leave. In nature, there are fairy circles. They can look like a circle of mushrooms, a circle of leaves, a circle of flowers, or a circle of trees. The circle has a distinct energy when you walk into it. It feels like you walked through a portal – that’s what it is. It’s a circle and a portal into a different realm. Keep walking. Some people get trapped in it. It’s like being dumped onto a different timeline. It puts them on a different path. Not necessarily a bad path, but a different one.

“I was taught, ‘Don’t make a deal with them, but you can ask them for things. Be polite about it. Never demand anything.’”

“Everybody is taught that if you make them mad, give them a bowl of sugar. This is my biggest pet peeve in the world! Don’t give them the sugar. Have you ever been apologized to and it’s so saccharinely-sweet that you know it’s a lie? That’s what the bowl of sugar is to them. ‘I see that you are apologizing, but I know that it’s total B.S.’”

“They are obnoxious little sh*ts. I love them. I love them with all of my heart. I really do. But they are so obnoxious. They hide things. They are basically two-year olds. It’s the only way I can explain it. They know way too much legal. They make contracts and they are like lawyers. They say, ‘I did these four things and they fall exactly into what you said I was allowed to do. I did not break the terms of my parole.’”

Because I knew nothing about this, I asked for an example

Mikayla responded, “They hide things because they know that you can’t get mad at them. They didn’t do anything wrong, technically. They didn’t take it from you, they just put it in a new place. They say, ‘I didn’t break it. I just hid it.’ You get used to it when you are working with fae energy. You get used to the chaos. More often than not, you’ll see me standing in the middle of my house yelling, ‘Give it back!’”

“It’s chaotic. It’s like babysitting a bunch of two-year olds who have had way too much sugar, but it’s worth it because they help me. I wouldn’t give it up for anything.”

A few minutes after our conversation, I saw Mikayla work her magic. She was standing in front of a case of essential oils, helping a customer find the oil she needed. As Mikayla snapped her fingers in front of the case, she explained:

“When this case is full, it holds 500 oils. This customer is looking for something specific. When I snap, my hand catches somewhere. It’s a higher frequency. It feels like a magnet. If I come up here, my hand is yanked back down. I picked this oil, but my hand was still catching. It’s not supposed to do that if I’ve picked the right one. So, I put the first one back and restarted the process.

“I start at the four corners, then move to the center. I check the diagonal. I come back to the same area. Snapping helps me hone into a specific point. My palm will get me to a few rows, but snapping will get me to the correct oil. It’s the oil which was right next to the one I picked up earlier.”

Of course, a few minutes later, I asked Mikayla to find an essential oil for me. Mikayla started snapping. Lots of snapping. For me, Mikayla selected Libra #2. This oil boosts the artistic side of oneself. It removes blockages and helps with the creative and writing side of things. I am using it right now.

Reta owns Abitha’s Metaphysical Shop in Albuquerque, NM. Her mother and aunt started the shop in 1988 when they could not find the supplies they needed to do rituals and ceremonies. Reta took over the shop in 2012.

In addition to owning the store, Reta is also a psychic. Occasionally, she does readings. Prior to the pandemic, several psychics provided readings at the store. Now, most of them work online or over the phone. However, Reta is planning a Psychic Fair to be held outdoors on October 24.

I asked Reta about her psychic abilities and how she taps into the unseen world. She told me that she has always been psychic. She was born this way. Her parents were not sure what to do with her, so they just let her be. As a child, she had prophetic dreams. Her Guide has been with her for her entire life. She was born with him and can’t remember a day she hasn’t spoken with him

How did Reta figure out she experienced life differently than other people? She was teased and beaten up at school for talking about things she should not have known. Because of this, she turned off her abilities so she could live a more-normal life. However, when she got older, “it” kicked down the door and said, “You will pay attention to us!”

Eventually, Reta began doing readings. She is clairaudient, so she hears words. She also sees images and smells things.

Reta said, “I used to refer to it as the Claritin commercial. It’s like there is a film there. There’s a movie playing on a screen between me and them, and I tell them what I see. I can see through the screen. I can see images.

“Sometimes, I am told ‘No.’ I’ll sit down with someone to do a reading, and they are like, ‘No. They don’t listen. We are not telling them anything anymore.’ When that happens, I can’t do the reading.

“Other times, it tends to be loud.”

“One day, we had a customer in here. I was stocking things, and I turned around and called her by a name that her great-grandmother used to call her. I reprimanded her for half a dozen things. Then I stopped and said, ‘She would like you to listen more.’

“I walked away – ‘Will you all stop highjacking me?!? It would be great if you would stop highjacking me.’ It happens.

“If people aren’t listening, I am asked to tell them to listen. I tell them: Meditate. Listen. They are trying to tell you stuff for your own good.

“That’s my life. Ta-da.”

[Laughing.]

I asked if the information came from Reta’s Guides or angels, or from the client’s Guides or angels, or directly from the client’s energy?

Reta answered, “All of the above.”

“Information comes off of their auras. I can see a little bit of the energy shield around them. I pay attention to that.

“If one of their Guides, or one of their people, try to talk to them and I don’t understand the language, my Guides translate for me. I’ll hear it through them. Some people, even though they don’t speak Spanish, have Spanish-speaking ancestors. I have to get someone to translate. Some of their ancestors, or Guides, are ancient and speak in different languages. It takes me a minute to go through my translator.”

I asked, “Are you open to this all the time, or do you need to turn it on and off?”

Reta replied, “I hear things all the time. They used to wake me up at night. I had to set business hours. I need to sleep.

“I teach people to set office hours. If you are at work and your gifts are trying to turn on and get your attention, you say, ‘No. This is my work time. You can’t interrupt. I will give you this time and this time. This is when you can talk to me.’ If you are still having problems, meditate. The more you meditate, the calmer everything will get for you.”

Reta added, “When my mother passed away, she wanted to talk to me all the time. I was like, ‘Woman, you’ve got to go to HR.’ I had to throw her a tea party to get her to cross over.

“We have customers who recently lost somebody and want to talk to them. No. You have to let them go through ‘HR.’ When they are done with that, they can come back. They have to learn to be dead.

“I refer to it as ‘HR’ because a lot of times the living don’t realize that they are dead. They have to learn that they are dead. If they don’t go through that process, they may get stuck here, then their spirit may get sick. Bad things can happen – that’s my personal opinion. I say, let them go through HR and when they are done, they can come back, talk to you, and see how things are going.

“I don’t hear from my mother that often anymore. With my husband (who passed away), I’m constantly smelling cloves because he smoked clove cigarettes. It’s too much.”

“I don’t do readings around the time of my husband’s passing. If I get into that state, I can’t function. I start crying.

“I have learned that if you are sick, if you are feeling under the weather, if you are angry, if it’s an anniversary of something traumatic to you, do not do any type of readings. Do self care. Spiritual work is the best thing for those times.

“Every time I try to muster through a sinus infection or something, to do readings, the illness gets 100 times worse. It’s because you are opening yourself up. Not only is the germ or virus attacking your physical self, now it’s attacking your spiritual self as well. You are draining your battery while you are trying to heal your physical self. It’s best to take a break.

“I found that if I tried to do readings, my cold would last longer, my sinus infection would come on heavier. I was born with ear infections. I still get them. If I feel those coming on, I don’t even make the oils. I am working on a different level and I don’t want that. You have to save your energy so that you can get better faster.

“It’s the same thing when someone is working on a ritual or a spell. I tell them to make a priority list. Focus in on what they want to accomplish first, then do that. Then we do the next one. If they have six things they want to do and they set them all up, they’ve got a little bit of energy in each one. Instead, put all the energy into the most important one.”

I asked Reta if she had had a near-death experience.

She answered, “Yes, I almost died giving birth to my last child. From everybody in the room’s standpoint, they had to keep waking me up while I was giving birth. All I remember was talking to my grandfather who had passed away when I was in middle school. We were sitting in the park, talking about things. He was reminding me to try and give my grandmother a little bit more patience. I wondered, ‘Why are you telling me this? Why can’t you tell her?’ It wasn’t registering with me until after I was in recovery. I realized, ‘Wait a minute. I am in the hospital. When did I get here?’ It was very weird.”

I asked, “Did you have a choice to come back or to stay there? Did you make a choice?”

Reta replied, “No. I don’t remember making a choice. I just remember all of the sudden I was in the hospital and I was trying to remember how I had gotten there.  

“There are things we talked about that I remember, and I’m grateful I got to see him.”

Reta has two living children and one child who passed away as an infant.

Reta shared this story about her baby’s passing:

“I lived on the other side of the mountain when I had her. I was at work and she was at the babysitter. I got a call saying I had to go to the hospital. I went to that hospital and they pronounced her. My mom and her boyfriend picked me up and drove me back home. As we were driving, on the back country road, I saw all these almost-misted figures, walking the opposite direction that we were driving. I got to my house and my house was the quietest it had ever been the entire time I lived there. There was nothing. I heard nothing. My clairaudience was gone. Shut down. I had nothing for almost three months.

“Where I lived was a highly-active, spiritual-energy crossroads in the mountains. I was always picking up stuff. All I could figure was that the ones I had been talking to were leaving, to give me peace for a bit."

I asked if Reta saw psychic abilities in other family members. She told me that her aunt and her mother had abilities. She also saw them in her two living children. In most cases, it was stronger in the women than in the men, but she saw them in her creative son.

Reta added, “When my daughter was a baby learning to walk, she walked like a 90-year-old woman. Instead of wobbling, she was hunched over, step-by-step, and she would eat her weight in corn. We figured she was an ancient Native American lady who was pissed as hell. She must have died and been immediately put back.”

One of Reta’s grandsons is 7. When he was little, before he spoke English, he spoke a version of French from the 14th or 15th century. He would come to the shop, put crystals in cauldrons, and use pestles to stir the cauldrons.

Her other grandson is nearly 1. According to Reta, “He still has the connective energy from The Other Side and when I get around him, we talk about stuff. He’s not talking yet, he’s making baby sounds; but we can talk. I told my daughter that he said, ‘You won’t feed me green chili cheese fries!’ I wondered if this was his grandmother saying it. My daughter doesn’t want me feeding the infant cheese fries, so I don’t do that.” [Chuckling]

“When I was younger, I used to get teased and beaten up. Not fun. As I’ve gotten older, I like the fact that I get to use my abilities to help people.”

“I have had a few readings from other people. I’ve had two past-life readings. One time, I was in front of a firing squad. The other reader had 39 of my past lives check in with her. Nine times out of ten, I get taken out because I am ‘unholy,’ or I am ‘a witch,’ or somebody is jealous.

“I do the same thing in every life. This. Whatever this is, from the 10th century, that’s what I do. I choose to come back and do this every single time. I don’t have to. They give me a choice. I’m going to take the next cycle off – bring me my cabana boys and my drink. I’m going to take a respite. Then I’ll go back out in the field.

I wondered, “When you do readings for people, do you see their past lives?”

Reta answered, “Sometimes. I have a Doreen Virtue past-life deck I like to use. The cards have time periods and things like nuns, monks, professors, etc. I have the client shuffle the deck. The last time I did that, we found out the reason why the gentleman was having so many problems dating, being in a relationship, and making good money, was because he had been with the church and had taken the vow of silence, poverty, and chastity, and never released those thoughts. We set up a ritual ceremony for him to release that. Last I heard, he’s doing great.

I had to ask, “When you talk about ceremonies, are they Wiccan rituals or just regular ceremonies?”

Reta responded, “It’s a non-denominational kind of energy. I set the person up with all the things to do, then they have to do it themselves. I can’t do it for them, because I have no vested interest in it. If someone wants a house, why would I do a ritual for them to get a house? I already have a house. I give them instructions and tell them when to do it.

“I say, ‘If you start thinking about your grocery list, stop. Walk away and come back later. There is no problem with that. If you don’t want to leave your candle burning, snuff it out. Don’t blow it out because you blow away your energy and have to start all over again. If you are doing banishings, light the candle with a match. Matches have sulfur and sulfur is a banishing agent. If you are trying to bring thing something in, light it with a lighter or a lighting stick, because you don’t want to introduce sulfur to something you are trying to pull out. It pushes it away.’

I asked Reta how she knew all of this and she said, “They tell me. It comes in my head and I spew it out of my mouth. I don’t know how else to say it. Whatever downloads I get, I share.”  

Reta added, “We make the oils in the shop. When they are popular, I use them for incense. I also turn them into candles which have labels. The candles are packed up with oils and herbs for particular purposes. It’s a baseline you can take with you. Then, you put your energy and intention into it to suit your purpose. With these bundles, people don’t feel so overwhelmed when they are doing a new ceremony.

“At any given point, I have somewhere between 45 and 52 candles. I also have 500 oils.

“The oil formulas have been gathered over the 33 years we have been doing this. In addition, new ones have been channeled. Some formulas have to be changed because they don’t work like it did in the 1980s.

“One day, I decided that we needed to expand our archangels section. The archangels lined up at the door, filed in one at a time, and told me what to put in the oils.”

I traveled to New Mexico a couple of weeks ago and when I recall trip highlights, I think of the metaphysical shops I visited. I enjoyed the calm energy of these spots.

In Albuquerque, I stopped at Abitha’s Metaphysical Shop. This is a small store, but it is packed with cool stuff. A wooden rack holds 75 decks of Tarot cards. A glass case displays nearly 500 essential oils. The place has walls of candles, incense, herbs, and books. You can also find powders, drums, and essential items for rituals.

The people who work at the shop are psychic, each in their own way. The owner, Reta, blends the essential oils. Some oils are based on old recipes. Other oils are based on formulas which Reta channels. She uses the oils to infuse incense and candles for customers. Customers can also use the oils directly on their body.

Before COVID, psychics provided readings and classes at Abitha’s. Readers no longer have regular hours at the shop. However, Reta is planning a couple of psychic fairs on the front sidewalk. The first one will be October 24. From what I hear, wonderful readers show up at Abitha’s.

The shop was founded in 1988 when Reta’s mother and aunt were interested in performing rituals. They couldn’t find the supplies they needed, so they decided to open a shop and supply these items to the community. In 2012, Reta became the manager. She continues to supply the items her customers seek.

In Santa Fe, I stopped at The Ark Bookstore. This is not promoted as a psychic shop, but is a big space, full of metaphysical and self-help books. The store overflows with books.

In addition, there is a terrific wall of socks with all kinds of messages (see photo below). Crystals and jewelry are available for purchase, as are yoga supplies.

When I asked about psychic readings, I was told that they haven’t hosted them since COVID began, but were about to bring in an Astrologer once a week. If you’re in Santa Fe, look for that event.

This shop had a lovely energy and I found myself purchasing gifts for a few people, and a large orange calcite pyramid for myself. You can discover more about The Ark Bookstore on their website, www.arkbooks.com.

Also in Santa Fe, on a walk to the Plaza, I found a sign for Psychic Readings. The sign intrigued me, but I didn’t stop. While I was curious about what I might hear, I prefer to speak with psychics who have been recommended to me. I want to know from my friends and acquaintances that the psychics are real.

                                              Quote from a Psychic - Karma

With Karma, people may get pissed off if they think someone is doing something to hurt them, but that second person may be balancing out what the first person did to them which the first person is not willing to acknowledge, or which occurred in a previous lifetime. Judgement is up to G-d. People need to get out of the habit of judging others. Or it could be that one person hurt a second person who hurt a third person and the third person is now hurting the first person. It all balances out, but it is not necessarily a one-to-one correlation. Spirit uses whatever it needs to balance Karma.

About a month ago, I ran out things to say so I stopped posting to this blog. I want these posts to be valuable; full of new and interesting ideas. Today, I’m posting anew because my husband and I drove to New Mexico and toured the western part of the state. On this post, I will share photos from our trip. Next week, I’ll tell you about the metaphysical shops I visited. Then, I’ll recount the visits with the psychics who I had the joy to meet.

It was great to get out. It’s been more than two years since I’ve traveled anywhere. People in New Mexico wear masks indoors, so we felt safe enough. However, we ate at a few indoor restaurants, so we took some virus risks.

My favorite parts of the trip were the metaphysical shops and the galleries. New Mexico is full of art, and parts of the state smell like roasting chilies. Yum.
