I’m at that stage of life where people around me are retiring. Some are forced into retirement by health issues or workplace changes, but most are deciding that it’s time to have some fun while they are still healthy and active. I am watching most retirees blossom as they find new opportunities. However, others are struggling with their identities, finances, and health.
Our lives change all the time. We grow from infants to children to teens to adults. Then we take on the stages of adulthood, parenthood, career building, elder care, and retirement.
Spirit recently reminded us that it can be difficult for people who had occupations where they were able to say, “I was a tailor,” “I was a butler,” “I was a teacher,” etc., to let go of those identities and enjoy retirement. People tend to think that their title reflects their purpose in life. With (or without) a title, people have value.
According to Spirit, some people believe that retirement is an end. They don’t understand that retirement is the freedom from mundane responsibilities. This freedom allows them “to be.” To be. Not to do. To be. What a great honor. What a great privilege. Society says it is important to build finances, shelters, and a future. Now that those things have been accomplished, it’s time to move forward and reach the ultimate level of being.
Spirit went on, “You take a lot of things for granted when you are young. With a few years time, you have a different perspective. As you keep going in the cycle of life that you have chosen, changes continue. They become more apparent. The constant is the change.
“You are like a frog. A tadpole doesn’t know it will become a frog. A caterpillar doesn’t know it will become a butterfly. When the butterfly is encased and restricted, it thinks it will never be free. Then, it is free beyond its wildest dream. It may never crawl again.
“When you see yourselves going through the metamorphosis of your life, hanging on to the past holds you back. You will not return to the caterpillar state and need not crawl. Instead, you may receive the most glorious of wings, and fly.
“Have peace with yourselves and whatever state of development you are in. It will be greater than you know to ask. Clinging to the past, to your yesterdays, to who you were, serves no purpose. Those were merely required stepping stones which brought you to a greater awareness.
“The tadpole loses its tail, the caterpillar can’t move forward, and the baby needs to push out of the mother. These tough transitions are necessary.
“You have not reached this point in life just to fill up space. You requested this time of manifestation before you appeared as a single cell. Trust that your Higher Self knew why, and live anticipatorily, knowing that gifts are unfolding greater than you know. But no, they are not gifts to hold on to. They are gifts that you will, again, pass through to even more. That is your divine purpose in life. That is the lesson we would like to share.
“It’s all changing. Enjoy it now. Tomorrow it will be different. Maybe more enjoyable. Maybe uncomfortable. The guarantee is that it will be different. Ultimately, it is all for the greatest good. You are evolving.”
